Detailed Trip Information
Fishing Summary
The fishing at Beyond the Blue - South Caicos is 100% wading and sight fishing for Caribbean Bonefish, averaging 3 - 5 pounds with possible trophy fish weighing more than 10 pounds. The flats consist of firm white sand, with turtlegrass patches in some areas. The flats are vast and expansive, offering the Bonefish and other species (Barracuda, Tarpon, etc.) an environ that is abundant with food - crustaceans and baitfish. There are also inland creeks and lakes that may also be fished during certain tides.
All of these areas are accessed by a 24 foot airboat powered by a Chevy 454 counter-rotating props. This strategy allows anglers to quickly navigate the extensive shallow flats and spend more time fishing than searching for Bonefish on foot. The higher vantage point from the airboat allows anglers and guide to look down upon the flats and see the schools of Bonefish that reside on the flats at South Caicos. When a school(s) of Bonefish are spotted, the airboat parks a safe distance away so as to not spook the school. Then, anglers deploy from the airboat and pursue the fish while wading. In addition, if anglers desire to “hunt” smaller schools or larger single/doubles the guides will access flats that are prime for stalking fish in this manner. Run times in the airboat from the lodge to the nearest edge of the flats is 15 minutes.
Fishing Tackle and Techniques
Most anglers prefer to fish 7 to 9 weight rods at South Caicos. When wind conditions and/or size of fish dictate, 9 weight rods are the order of the day. The wonderful part of fly fishing at South Caicos is that all fishing is conducted with a tropical floating flyline, tapered leader, and light fly. In general, stout leaders (13#) in lengths of 10 - 12 feet are all that is needed. Most Bonefish fly patterns that are #4 in size and in colors tan/pink are all that is needed to successfully pursue these fish.
As with any flats species, a stealthy approach to stalking the Bonefish is going to yield the most success. Anglers should be able to cast a minimum of 40 feet accurately. Anglers will be wading extensively, so flats booties or boots will be needed while wading the flats. Finally, one of the most important pieces of tackle to successfully pursue Bonefish is a high quality pair of polarized sunglasses - amber, copper, rose, or brown tints are best for flats fishing.
